XFile - The XTree compatible file manager for Microsoft Windows
Deutsch
Many years ago when DOS was popular one file manager dominated the market - this was XTree Gold.
XTree Gold introduced a simple but very effective interface to manage files. This included a command bar with predefined commands which can easily be executed with a single key stroke.

XTree Gold offered many functions which are not available in most of the "modern" file managers, for example File Masks to display only files that match a file specification (e.g. *.doc) and History lists to select a previously used values (e.g. path names or file names) for every command.

XFile from Coastline Software offers most of the original functionality of XTree Gold within a real Microsoft Windows application.
In addition many new functions, like Go To, File Viewers, Image Gallery and Web Commands have been added to XFile.

Unlike many other applications XFile is very compact (less than 1 MB in file size), leaves only a small footprint in the memory, is very fast and requires no installation.

Look & Feel!

First of all and most important, XFile looks and feels like XTree Gold for DOS.

Although there have been some minor changes for the integration into the Windows environment, it will still give you the same Look & Feel!

Customize it!

When installed for the first time, XFile will be presented using the original colors introduced by XTree Gold.

The configuration settings allow you to customize the colours and fonts and even store these in XFile Themes files to easily change the appearance!

Log a drive

To view the contents of a drive, simply press the letter of a drive - you don't have to expand trees anymore.

In addition you can even jump straight away to common folders, e.g. Desktop or Program Files.

File masks!

XFile allows you to specify the file types you'd like view in a folder.

Simply use the File Spec command and enter a single file mask or a list of file masks or simply select a File Spec from the history list!

History Lists

Every command in XFile provides a history list which allows you to easily select previously entered file names, path names and values.

The behaviour of the history lists in XFile is identical to XTree Gold. You can delete items from the history list and lock items to prevent them from being deleted.

Statistics

The statistics pane always shows information about the logged drive, the logged and selected folders and files and the selected file.

The statistics pane is located on the right hand side of the main window and can also be be resized.

File Viewer

The integrated file viewer provides an instant preview of any file without the need of starting other applications. The viewer supports the ASCII, Dump and Hex mode.

The search function makes it easy to locate any text in a file. Source files can even be viewed using syntax highlighting.

Hex Viewer and Editor

The hex viewer in XFile can be used to show the contents of any file in Hex mode. This is helpful to analyze and modify binary files.

The hex viewer makes it easy to edit a binary file on the byte level. The search function can be used to find labels in a file.

Integrated Image Viewer

The integrated image viewer can be used to view single images files. The viewer supports common file types (e.g. BMP, JPG, GIF, ICO, WMF etc.).

The viewer provides several options to customize the view like Rotation, Stretch, Zoom and Full Screen.

Images can be stored as BMP and JPG files or copied to the clipboard. A single key stroke allows you to open the image in the editor defined in the configuration.

An image file can also be viewed using the Hex Viewer to analyze the binary data.

Image Gallery

The Image Gallery function in XFile shows thumbnails of all supported images in a folder. It's also possible to change the size of the thumbnails.

The integrated slide show functionality can auto-matically present all images. Several options are available to customize the slide show.

Icons

XFile can even help you to extract icons from existing binary files (DLL, EXE etc.).

Simply point XFile to a file and folder and select the desired icon to save it as a icon file or as bitmap file.

Archive

XFile allows you to create or open archives in the ZIP and CAB file format. The contents of an archive will be displayed in the file list.

Several commands are available to select, view and extract files.
